Compostela con Encanto . El parque de Bonaval

Bonaval, encantador.

Curioso, al lado de uno de los edificios más antiguos de Compostela (el convento de San Domingos de Bonaval, construido en el siglo XIII y residencia del Museo do Pobo Galego) se encuentra uno de los más modernos: el Centro Galego de Arte Contemporáneo, del arquitecto Alvaro de Siza; contrastes.

Detrás (o delante, según se mire), el más hermoso y misterioso parque compostelano. Rediseñado en 1994 por el arquitecto Alvaro Siza y la paisajista Isabel Aguirre, lo tiene todo en 45 hectáreas: huerta, cementerio, carballeira (robledal), ruinas , fuentes, árboles centenarios, vistas … y mucha tranquilidad,

La entrada más conocida, entre los dos edificios antagónicos en edad, nos lleva a la parte de atrás del convento, la parte baja, donde los monjes cultivaban la tierra, enormes cipreses vigilan la antigua huerta y algunas ruinas, seguimos el camino (de piedra, claro) , un castaño centenario nos observa, otra terraza verde, otras ruinas, otra vista de la ciudad, una escultura de Chillida…subimos más, una gran carballeira rodeada de murallas dando sombra, vemos una pequeña puerta, atravesamos y el gran espacio sorprende, una ladera con árboles y nichos: estamos detrás de un cementerio poco democrático, ya que había zona para ricos y pobres, para católicos y agnósticos, ya sabemos quien tendría las mejores vistas. En este camposanto vacío ya, se suelen proyectar películas y cortos en las noches de verano, ¿se verá algún fuego fatuo?.

La visión desde este lado del parque es espectacular, fácilmente puedes subir a los muros de encima de los nichos para observar cómo compiten chimeneas, torres,  y tejados por ver quién llega más alto. Suena la Berenguela(la campana de la catedral) y la tarde comienza a caer a lo lejos, calma y cierto sopor placentero; malabaristas, parejas, estudiantes, turistas, paseantes de perros con perros…todos descansan en las verdes praderas, juegan, ríen, dan palmas, hablan, escapan del barullo de la Babilonia, algo tiene este parque, encantador  Bonaval.

Bonaval, a lovely park

It is curious. Just beside one of the most ancient buildings in Compostela, -San Domingos de Bonaval Monastery, built in the 13^th century and now housing the Museo do Pobo Galego- stands one of the most modern buildings in Compostela: The Galician Centre of Contemporary Art, designed by Alvaro de Siza... Contrasts you find in life…

Just behind it, (or in front of it, depending on where you are) is the most beautiful and mysterious park in Compostela. It was reformed in 1994 by the architect Alvaro Siza and the landscape gardener Isabel Aguirre and it has everything in its 45 hectares: a vegetable garden, a cemetery, an oak forest, ruins, fountains, centenary trees, beautiful views and… real peace. 

The best known entrance, between the two buildings from a very different age, takes us to the back of the monastery, the lower part, where the monks used to cultivate the land, huge cypresses keep a close watch on the old vegetable garden and some ruins.  We follow the path, (made of stone, of course) and a centenary chestnut tree observes us. Another green terrace, other ruins, another view of the city, a sculpture by Chillida… We go up and a great oak forest surrounded by big walls casts a shadow; we find a small door, we go through it and the great space is surprising, a hillside with trees and niches: we are behind an un-democratic cemetery, divided in different areas: for the rich and the poor,   the catholic and the agnostic… and we may well guess who has the best views…

In this graveyard, now empty, films and short films are screened on summer nights. Maybe a fatuous fire can be seen…

The sight is spectacular, from this side of the park, you can easily climb unto the walls over the niches and see how chimneys, towers and roofs compete to see who gets further up… The Berenguela, the cathedral bell, rings and the afternoon begins to fall in the distance, calmness and a certain pleasant drowsiness, jugglers, couples, students, tourists, people taking their dogs out for a walk. All of them rest in the green lawn, play, laugh, clap their hands, talk, run away from the racket to the wonderful Babylon constituted by this great park: Bonaval.
